Artists, unleash your creative talents and dabble in different media or genres in the company of fellow enthusiasts. Let the breath-taking scenery of northwest France and its surrounding region inspire you to make your own French Impressions on canvas on a tutored painting holiday or drawing holiday.

Angela Birchall
Whether you are an experienced artist or a beginner, Le Choisel is an inspiring location for a painting holiday where you can learn new techniques in painting or drawing, try working in a new medium, and enjoy being among fellow artists as you develop your artistic abilities.

Your tutor, Angela Birchall, is an experienced artist and teacher. She was taught by a Royal Academician before going on to complete her first degree specialising in teaching art and design and a masters degree in adult education. She works in oils, watercolours, acrylics, pastels, pencil and charcoal, and is passionate about teaching people to draw with what she calls her "debunking the myth 'I can't draw'!" programme.

She leads classes in painting and drawing, works with you as you sketch and paint on location, and facilitates discussions linking the day’s activities with the work of artists from the past, especially the French Impressionists.

Normandy, and the effects that its changing light had on the landscape, fascinated French Impressionist painters like Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro who immortalised the province in a multitude of canvases. When you experience the phenomenon of the Normandy light qualities for yourself you will soon understand why the Impressionists were so captivated by it.

Situated in the Parc Naturel Régional de Normandie-Maine in northwest France, Le Choisel is the perfect setting in which to develop your own creative talents and explore new genres and mediums. Right on the doorstep there are rolling hills, rocky outcrops, lush fields, enchanting forests, roaring cascades, languid lakes, rippling rivers and the ever-changing flora both wild and cultivated – all here to inspire you.

Painting holidays at Le Choisel are structured to enable you to gain the most opportunities to explore different mediums and genre, but also flexible enough to try and accommodate specific elements that our artist guests would like to explore (these need to be outlined in advance). The groups are small (maximum of 8) to enable you to enjoy personal attention and tuition.

The painting holidays cover 7 days/6 nights and include:
  • full board and accommodation; wherever possible, meals are prepared with locally-sourced ingredients including home-grown organic vegetables.
  • tuition and painting and drawing materials; you can work in watercolours (paints and pencils), acrylics, pastel, chalk, pencil and charcoal.

Please note: all tuition will be in English.

Holidays can be extended, subject to availability, if booked in advance.

Airport and ferry transfers can also be arranged, please ask for details and prices; all charges will be payable locally.

Non-participating partners sharing a room are welcome. They are invited to join us for meals and activities other than tuition sessions, and will be charged a reduced rate.

For art clubs booking at least 5 participant places on a course, the programme can be arranged on a bespoke basis.

learn to draw!
Can you hold a pen or pencil and  use it to write a few words, and see the object that you want to depict? If the answers are ‘yes’, then you can learn to draw on a drawing holiday in France.
Sounds too good to be true? It isn’t! In just one lesson you will be able to see the difference – because it is all about seeing. The “seeing” you need to be able to draw, is “seeing” using the right hemisphere of your brain.
Angela, who is course tutor on the drawing holidays, explains: "I was taught to draw properly by a Royal Academician when I was a teenage art student. Years later doing my first degree I found some “new” psychology research which showed that those working in the right hemisphere of the brain could produce much better drawings than those working in the left hemisphere. Some of the experiments and exercises that followed in this “revolutionary new research” replicated the way I had been taught a decade before by a tutor who had been taught that way by masters who had been taught by their masters, and so on.
"I combined that new research with my past experience for my art teaching dissertation and have used it ever since in both my own art and in my teaching. The sessions are fun, but most of all, they are eye-opening and mind-changing!"
Elements of ‘Learning to draw’ can be combined in the general painting holiday programme or you can join a specific drawing holiday programme.

Typical 'painting holiday in France' programme:

Day 1  – arrive from 2pm onwards. Settle in and enjoy afternoon tea as you meet fellow artists for a chat about the week ahead. Time to explore Le Choisel’s grounds before dinner.

Day 2  – drawing is the foundation to all 2D art forms so we experiment with exercises to heighten your awareness and ability to accurately portray what is in front of you in a variety of drawing media. The afternoon sees the first of the week’s sketching on location sessions.

Day 3   – after breakfast we experiment with and explore the benefits of different media for different purposes and subject matter, such as portraiture or still life.

Day 4  –  on location sketching and painting landscapes; the area has a tremendous variety of scenery to choose from, offering something to inspire and challenge every artist.

Day 5  –  on location sketching and painting buildings and street scenes using perspective drawing. Depending the weather and season, it could be the interior or exterior of castles, chateaux, churches, medieval houses or ancient ruins.

Day 6   – spend the day finishing off drawings and paintings from sketches made on location during the week.

Day 7  – after breakfast, time to say goodbye and swap contacts with friends you have made on your painting holiday.

Note: the sequence of activities may be changed depending on the weather.
